Summary/Abstract: The essay is an introduction to the critical work of Max Herrmann-Neiße. He follows Alfred Kerr’s theory of criticism as a fourth genre equal in status to poetry, prose and drama, and understands criticism as metaliterature. Through Herrmann-Neiße’s practice as a critic, he develops a history of contemporary literature, which positions regional literature such as Silesian and Western and Eastern European literature in the context of world literature. The critical, annotated, analogue and digital edition of the Kritiken und Essays (1909–1939) exploits this important archive of cultural history for scientific and common uses.
