Summary/Abstract: After September 8, 2015 the Catholic Church received with great eagerness Pope Francis’s two special communications (called motu proprio) concerning the process of declaration of nullity. The motu proprio issued for the Latin branch of the Church is known as Mitis Iudex Dominus Iesus – “The Lord Jesus, Clement Judge”. The Holy Father’s goal is to simplify the process and thus make it faster, more accessible to people, who are seeking a resolution to their situation in the Church. The sensationalism that has surrounded the Mitis Iudex caused some difficulty in understanding some of the reforms. It would be helpful to have new procedural norms to specify how exactly the new process is to work in practice. Until a new procedure arrives it is necessary for the canonists to work together and agree some standard practices.
