Summary/Abstract: The article presents issues concerning the organization and activity of public schools run by the Benedictines in Seiciechów at the turn of the 18th and 19th century. The time period under study begins with the year of foundation of the sub-faculty school in Stężyca at the initiative of the Sieciechów monastery, and ends with the year of introduction of the suppression law, which led to the dissolution of the Sieciechów abbey. The article pays particular attention to issues related to the organizational status of Sieciechów schools, the curriculum and level of teaching, the teaching staff, the number of students and material resources, including the school library’s collections. The basic source material for the research in this area comprises a set of fi les of the educational authorities that supervised Sieciechów schools in the period in question, including visitation reports and the reports submitted by Sieciechów school administrators. The preserved archival legacy of the monastery and the offi cial records of the period of residency in and evacuation from the dissolved abbey were of great importance for some of the issues discussed. During more than twenty-fi ve years of the existence of the Sieciechów schools, their administrative affi liation and organizational and programming model underwent certain changes. The activity of schools was signifi cantly infl uenced by political and territorial changes and educational reforms carried out by state authorities at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Established in 1791, the school in Stężyca was given the status of a sub-faculty school, and its operation was based on the basis of the teaching system of the National Education Commission. After several years, the school was moved to Sieciechów, which led to a dispute with the inhabitants of Stężyca, which continued in the times of the Duchy of Warsaw. At the beginning of the 19th century the school in Sieciechów was arranged on the model of Austrian gymnasiums, and during the period of existence of the Duchy of Warsaw and the Kingdom of Poland it was qualifi ed to becaome sub-faculty and faculty establishments. The teaching staff of the school were mainly monks from the Sieciechów monastery, but the teachers, especially of linguistic subjects, included also lay people. An important didactic function was performed by the school library, the content of which consisted of textbooks and auxiliary literature.
