Summary/Abstract: The essay deals with the monographic topic as well as theoretical questions of the genre. It presents Martin Kessel (1901-1990) mainly by analysing his aphorisms in his novel Herrn Brechers Fiasko and in his essays. It addresses the transformation/rearrangement of those aphorisms in Kessel’s books Aphorisms (1948) and Gegengabe (1960) respectively. Motifs like the ghost and the devil form the foundations of the author’s anthropology. Context and anthropology are two key issues in the current research on the genre and the author provides deeper insight into these topics.
