Summary/Abstract: Using the example of seemingly ‚typical‘ Polish proverbs, it will be shown that what is ‚typical‘ within and of a culture can be understood as the outcome of a discursive quarrel, which is controversial or even taunting at times. Accordingly, the adscription of identity stems from an ongoing dispute about what is seen as culturally distinctive from an emic and etic perspective.
