Die sprachliche Situation in der alten deutschen Sprachinsel Kostenthal/Gościęcin im Unterschied zu anderen Teilen Oberschlesiens

Summary/Abstract: The varieties of German spoken beyond the closed German speaking territories are, as a result of the interaction with the surrounding languages, a kind of contact varieties. Still, it doesn’t mean that those vernaculars are homogenous. The present paper shows on the basis of the vernacular of Gościęcin that the varieties of the Upper Silesian speech islands vary from the German which is spoken in the most parts of Upper Silesia. The differences result from different historical developments of the varieties. The aim is also to outline the state of linguistic research on Silesia and to point some still existing research gaps.
