Summary/Abstract: Synchronic lexicology is a new branch of linguistics developing fast throughout the world in the second part of the 20th century as a result of the search for effective ways of communication between humans and machines. The article reviews and compares the development of this branch in Bulgaria and the Czech Republic in the second half of the past century in the context of intensive cooperation instigated for various reasons, including geopolitical ones. The article compares and contrasts the time of initial development of the branch, the status of lexicology within the scope of the respective national philological sciences and the basic principles of research as these are reflected in major publications in the field. The conclusion is drawn that unlike other fields of philological research – phonology, functional sentence perspective, theories of standard languages – the principles of the Prague school of lexicology has exercised a markedly weak influence on Bulgarian synchronic lexicology. The reasons are complex, but leading among them is the non-application of the methods of structuralism. On the other hand, a significant level of lexicalization of grammar is observed in Czech linguistics, which is lacking in Bulgarian linguistics. Furthermore, unlike Czech, Bulgarian is a fairly “grammatical language“ in which predicative relations are more frequently encoded outside the single lexical unit.
