Summary/Abstract: After the dismantling of the British and French colonial imperia in Africa in the early 1960s, a number of new states quickly emerged. Some continued to maintain good relations with their former masters and continued the colonial administration they had set up, others turned elsewhere, be it for political or economic reasons, to seek help in the building up of state institutions. For the then superpowers, the USA and the Soviet Union, but also for other states, new fields of competition opened up – assistance in the building up of armed forces was among the strategically most important forms. This concerned not only political struggle and the effort to win the favour of new states and exercise influence through military advisors, but also the effort to find important markets and valuable contacts.
