Summary/Abstract: The decision-making processes and the sorting out of personnel issues within the power elites of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia and the state bodies which it controlled was influenced by many factors, most of which remained hidden from uninvolved observers. This was especially due to the fact that the Communist Party sought to appear unified to the outside world. It therefore concealed conflicts between various interest and opinion groups within its leadership, even though they had a major impact on the party’s policy that determined the fate of the whole country. The issue of nationality was a factor of great importance.
