In 1952, following the defeat of the resistance movement by Soviet forces, approximately 400,000 people were transported to Soviet gulags. During this time, a third of the Lithuanian population perished and was replaced by an influx of Russians and other Soviet nationalities into the country. Today, ethnic Lithuanians make-up 80% of the population. The Lithuanian experience of democracy during the 20th century lasted a mere twenty years (1918-1940). In Lithuania, there is an overriding historical sense of psychological unease. [...]"
