Summary/Abstract: Since the fall of Soviet communism, the core base of the political Left has been shifting away from manufacturing and industry. Part of the reason for this is that these professions are increasingly being transported to the Third World. Meanwhile, the large growth in the wealth of skilled technological workers is being accompanied by the growth of large groups of people without a valid function in our post-industrial society. So what place does Karl Marx’s recipe for the dysfunctions of capitalism have in today’s society?
