Summary/Abstract: In the late 1920s and early 1930s, the “Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräber- fürsorge e. V.”, under the influence of rising Nazi nationalism, began to work on architectural projects for the construction of monumental military mass graves for the fallen German soldiers in the First World War, which drastically exceeded Union’s basic commitment: “Caring for the graves of our fallen...” Тhe prototype of that kind of mass grave is “Totenborg” – Bitola, a masterpiece of the monumental and sacral architecture, whose structure lasted between 1930 and 1934, where the remains of 2,825 German soldiers, 142 Austro-Hungarian soldiers, 119 Bulgarian soldiers, 16 Russian soldiers, 13 Romanian soldiers and 22 members of unknown nations were buried, and whose consecration was carried out on October 25, 1936, in the presence of senior diplomatic and military representatives of the Third Reich, France, Bulgaria, Romania and the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.
