Summary/Abstract: In this paper, we will use the position which in Serbian retrospective bibliography and literary history occupies the work of the romantic poet Petar Preradović, a Serb from Croatia, a Roman Catholic and a proponent of the Yugoslav idea, as an example of the logic and consequences of the process of radical narrowing of the concept of Serbian national identity during the 20th century. Instead of differences between the Serbian and the Croatian model of national culture, we will dwell on the ideology that Serbian culture manifested through its changing attitude towards Preradović.
