Summary/Abstract: Plays by Dušan Kovačević have been contextualized in two ways in numerous studies: in the sphere of national drama, as unique and highly specific continuation of the dramatic canon whose most important predecessor was Branislav Nušić, and also as a reflection of some of the most influential post-World War II dramatic trends in a wider European framework. The Professional by Dušan Kovačević can be interpreted as a response to Václav Havel’s Audience. Depending primarily on the interpretation of the ending of this one-act play by Havel, Kovačević’s play can be positioned as one of its variations and/or a kind of sequel to it. The main characters of these plays, writers Ferdinand Vaněk and Teodor Teja Kraj, represent different types of dissident activity in Europe during the socialist era. In principle, Vaněk represents a figure of consistent resistance against a totalitarian regime, while Kraj is symbolic of a former dissident who has made a pact with representatives of the political practice he doesn’t agree with.
