Summary/Abstract: The paper focuses on the heritage of Juozas Balčikonis (1885–1969), professor of Vilnius University, academician of the Lithuanian Science Academy. His contribution to compiling the multi-volume Lietuvių kalbos žodynas (Dictionary of the Lithuanian Language) and his tremendous work when teaching standard Lithuanian are overviewed. The dictionary was started by Kazimieras Būga; his files were taken over by Juozas Balčikonis, who considerably increased their number by adding illustrative examples of spoken and written language, which resulted in creating a unique dictionary type based primarily on authentic samples of language use. The priority given to the inherited lexicon later served as a basis for writing the encyclopaedia of the Lithuanian language and national culture. In the area of language teaching and education, J.Balčikonis' contribution is particularly important in translating fairy tales and other literature. His translations could be treated as samples of a specific style, his school of translation. His linguistic and language education work represent the basis of the folk culture he was trying to promote as well as the principles of teaching authentic standard Lithuanian.
