On the place-names Mielagėnai and Melagėnai

Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the problem of two authentic place-names of Eastern Lithuania – the town Mielagėnai and the village Melagėnai. The historic and dialectal data attest to the fact that the name of the village Melagėnai (with the root melag-) in the district of Švenčionys is authentic, whereas the name of the small town in the district of Ignalina – Mielagėnai (with the root mielag-) is not. Taking into consideration the criteria of tradition and expedience, the standard Lithuanian usage should accept both names.
