Summary/Abstract: The universal vote, legislated in most European countries a century ago, is the political gift made by the governors to all the poor and uneducated social blankets that took the hard part to the Great War. The introduction of this new mechanism of legitimizing the authority put an end to the tradition of the censitaire suffrage, which had been the basis of the liberal and conservative democracies of the second half of the 19th century. The right to vote has been hotly debated in political and intellectual circles for about three decades, generating serious doctrinal positions in both the followers’ camp and that of its contestants.
