Summary/Abstract: This contribution aims to outline the main doctrinal and political elements of the unionist project conceived by the "founding fathers" of the Romanian nation and state. The local modernizing elites created and implemented, starting with 1848, during three generations, a political project that aimed at perfecting the ideal of uniting all Romanians within the borders of the same state. This "country program" reflected the progressive ideas of the nineteenth century, which promoted the concepts of nation and national state. The local modernizing nobility, during seven decades (1848-1918 / 1919), created a state (Romania), started the modernization process in the spirit and according to the dominant models of the era, managing the miracle that at the end of the Great War unified territories inhabited by Romanians who in 1848 were part of three multinational empires: Ottoman, Tsarist and Habsburg.
