Summary/Abstract: In the thesis, we were analyzing language policy in Bosnia and Hercegovina in the 19th century, when the Austro-Hungarians took control of this area from the Ottomans. The inconsistency in qualifying the Ottomans’ relationship to the language, as well as some less known or unmentioned details regarding the National Government’s attitude towards the language issue in Bosnia, have sparked our more thorough research on this extremely complex topic. Apart from this, we also dealt with the influence of the incoming strong national currents in the 19th century on the relationship of domestic population and the government to the language issue. During the 1870s, the Ottomans started organized research on the language in this area by introducing the process of the language standardization. The Austro-Hungarian language policy continued the processes started by the Ottomans, although aimed towards another direction, better organized, and with much more severity, which often had impact on the interethnic relationships. The National Government confirmed its commitment to the phonological ortographic principles which have been followed since the Ottoman period, which had a big influence on embracing these principles later by our neighbors – Serbia and Croatia. The attitude towards the language during the Austro-Hungarian era is closely related to fulfillment of their political and national goals. The linguists’ thoughts were often neglected, as well as the real language practice and its nomination among the Bosnian population.
