Summary/Abstract: For the Catholic Church in Czechoslovakia, the 1948 February coup opened a period of hardship. Hundreds of clerics were isolated or directly imprisoned, while thousands of believers were persecuted for their resistance against communism. In the early 1950s, many active believers were put on trial, one of the most important of which was the extensive trial called “JUDr. František Valena & co.” One of those sentenced in this trial was Adolf Svinka, an active lay person from Kyjov, who was also involved in the clandestine distribution of printed church materials in the Olomouc archdiocese. In Kyjov he contacted a member of a secret group of people smugglers and tried to organise the escape of Felix Davídek and some others. Unfortunately, the smugglers were actually pro-regime collaborators, and therefore Svinka, Davídek and many others ended up in prison. Some time after 1989, Adolf Svinka typed up several pages of his memoirs, which are published herein.
