Summary/Abstract: The seemingly apolitical Act No. 44/1973 Coll. was supposed to protect society from recidivists, other “asocial elements” and provide for their correction. On its grounds, a convict’s life could be severely restricted for up to three years after release from prison. From the early 1980s, so-called preventative supervision was also applied to many of those imprisoned for political reasons or for their non-conforming cultural and other activities.
