Summary/Abstract: When Romania reached the thirtieth anniversary of the downfall of its communist regime at the end of last year, the wave of commemoration of the historical experience associated with it reached a peak, just as it did in other post-socialist European states. As in the majority of other countries that underwent an analogous period of the ruling socialist establishment, there is not just a single dominating interpretation of the period, one hegemonic narrative, in Romania that could define the standard of perception for the whole of society. Plurality of opinion, after all, can be considered a feature of a healthy society, one which is capable of intermediating open discussion while maintaining the primary normative bases which represent its main axis. Still, the case of Romania has several specific aspects which make it an interesting subject for research into the memory of the communist era and its pictorial codification.
