Summary/Abstract: This paper is intended to be a presentation of the circumstances under whichConstantine the Great came to be the ruler of the Roman Empire, and of the majorreforms he initiated during his reign in favor of the Christian Church, along with hismother Helena. The fi rst part of the paper outlines the political and religious contextin the Roman Empire at the end of the third century and the beginning of the fourthone. The next section is dedicated to the conversion of Constantine and the Edict ofMilan, which marked his option for Christianity. The last part of the study depictsthe main actions Constantine took for the benefi t of the Church and the Roman society: the Council of Nicaea, facilities given to the Church, improvement of the familylegislation, establishment of the empire at Byzantium, humanitarian actions, supportfor the holy places
