Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with gossip, its description in dictionaries and its written form as found in newspapers and magazines. In the first part of the paper, an attempt is made to define gossip as a linguistic and social activity, with regard to its description in linguistic literature and contemporary Croatian dictionaries. After that, gossip is analyzed as a text genre based on the model developed by Nada Ivanetić in her book Uporabni tekstovi (Practical Texts), which includes situational context, function, macrostructure and microstructure of the text genre. In addition, it is discussed how gossip as a text genre meets the seven standards of textuality introduced by de Beaugrande and Dressler: cohesion, coherence, intentionality, acceptability, informativity, situationality and intertextuality. The analysis is conducted on a corpus of texts focusing on royal families from the Croatian gossip magazine Gloria. Finally, a description of gossip in a modern e-dictionary is proposed and some lexicographic problems related to is are discussed based on the insights from the analysis of the text genre and the data in Croatian text corpora.
