Meaning and Value of Sign as Determinants of its Place in the System

Summary/Abstract: The paper aims at comparing de Saussure’s views on the value and meaning of signs, as presented in Course of General Linguistics with corresponding views present in his Writings in General Linguistics on the one hand, and with methodological tenets of structural linguistics on the other. Particular attention is paid to the degree, in which systemic semantics, and particularly semantic explications based on distictive semantic components reflect either the meaning of a sign, or its value.
