Summary/Abstract: Leila Sebbar, a writer of French-Algerian roots, sees in writing a space for expressing her sense of exclusion, hybrid identity and the existence “between two shores”. Her favorite themes remain: History (colonial and post-colonial), oblivion, obligation of individual memory in face of individual and collective history, language, roots and family. On the basis of L. Sebbar’s texts Lettres parisiennes (1986) and Je ne parle pas la langue de mon père (2003), the author of the article analyzes the strategies of searching for identity and belonging which build the identity of the writer, who defines herself as “cross” and “mestizo”. Bound to function “between two cultures”, in the texts under analysis, Leila Sebbar poses several questions referring to the belonging of an individual looking for her place. They also contain a thesis of the power of positive values resulting from the conflict of identity.
