Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the article is to present årsgång, an ancient custom from southern Sweden and “huru det går till att gå årsgång”. What does the term årsgång and the phrase att gå årsgång actually mean? In order to explain this Swedish forgotten phenomenon we have to go back several centuries. The oldest description of the årsgång is included in Petter Rudbeck’s work Smålendske Antiqviteter (Chapter 56 “Om gå Årsgångh effter gammal Seedh”, ca. 1697–1700). In Småland this custom was practiced even as late as at the beginning of the 20th century and can be described as a kind of divination, a mental journey with the purpose of receiving the prediction of future events. The årsgångare was a person who decided to gain insight into the coming time and its events, and go årsgång, which was possible only during some special nights including Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve. The custom was ruled by a number of restrictive principles. One of them required to be cautious and follow a number of restrictive rules agreed upon. Otherwise one could be exposed to serious danger, including death. In addition, the article describes Year Walk – a type of single-player adventure game, created by Simogo, a Swedish mobile game development studio founded in 2010 in Malmö. The game’s plot is based on the custom of årsgång.
