A Few Remarks on the Definitions in the Warszawski Dictionary
Kilka uwag o definicjach w Słowniku warszawskim

Summary/Abstract: The article is an attempt to reconstruct the beliefs on the way meanings should be defined held by the editorial board of {Słownik języka polskiego} ed. by J. Karłowicz, A. A. Kryński and W. Niedźwiedzki. Due to the lack of preface one ought to search for them in publications pertaining to lexicography and in the definitions themselves. The Warszawski Dictionary contains all the dictionary definition types distinguished in Doroszewski’s classification, i.e.: real meaning, structural meaning (and loose structural), scope, synonymous, grammatical, {per oppositionem} and mixed. The paper refers to opinions of lexicographers of the time on the issue of synonymous definition. The emphasis was put on the ways meanings were defined and on the stylistics of the definitions which were much different from those used nowadays.
