Summary/Abstract: The literary oeuvre of Elena Văcărescu, the descendent of the illustrious family of scholars and founders of modern Romanian language and literature, represents an odd association of linguistic mentalities and codes. The present study attempts to define the cultural identity and belonging of this poetess, who found her inspiration in the archaic and popular language of the Romanian mindscape and patterns of thought and feeling, but wrote in modern French. Her texts were then reconverted to Romanianby various translators, in versions which sound better than the French “original” and so on. The author clearly inhabited two fatherlands: a natural and an adoptive one, one of feeling and one of writing.
