Summary/Abstract: This paper is based on a Jan Lutyński classification of methods of data collection in sociological research. This classification – with small modifications – has been used for nearly 40 years by a wide circle of sociologists – as well as in their research and teaching work. Due to significant growth of new research techniques and their increasing complexity and diversity, Jan Lutyński classification – especially as far as survey modes are concerned – is no longer useful. Within the paper, a proposal of a new classification of standardized and based on communication process methods of data collection is presented. This classification utilizes three new dimensions: degree of interviewer involvement; type of relationship between the interviewer and the respondent; and the presence/absence of computer assistance of data collection. Additionally, auxiliary dimensions are presented, which can be used while describing research procedures used in social sciences.
