Summary/Abstract: At the beginning, the author attempts to define the art of comic book as such, and then moves to describe the specific nature of the Czech comic book. He exposes us to the adventures of the Green Raoul, the graphic novel ‘Alois Nebel’ and a series of graphic collages by an underground artist entitled ‘Varlén’. These examples indicate the interconnection of this type of art with the Czech social reality. Thus, they refute the concept of the superiority of “the fantastic” over “the real” in comic books and indicate that this form of art is not easily classified.
