Summary/Abstract: Piero della Francesca’s Flagellation is perhaps the most mysterious painting of the Renaissance. From the fifteenth century to now, it has been understood in different ways and raised endless interpretations. Although remaining a masterpiece of art, it has become a hermeneutic object at the crossroads of Religion, History, Philosophy and Poetry. Thus, this ancient painting is paradoxically still an open work, whose meaning will never be definitive
