Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the clash between linguistics and psychoanalysis with regard to the supposed antithetical meaning of primary words. Taking the encounter between Lacan and Benveniste as a starting point, it discusses the majority of arguments that have been brought forward in this longstanding debate, often led by confusion with regard to its object. After insisting upon the necessary distinction between language and speech, passing through two important excursions, on the one hand into the question of being and signification and on the other hand into the wonderful world of Heraclitean opposites, the article finishes with an extended and chronological analysis of all major references which exist in Freud’s works about this subject.
