Summary/Abstract: During his two terms as the President of Lithuania (1998 through 2003 and 2004 thorough 2009), Valdas Adamkus became known for his close attention to Central and Eastern Europe, relations with Poland, and countries like Ukraine and Georgia. He has remained committed to these issues since, and is remembered to this day, internationally, as a leader who not only strengthened democracy at the national level but also defended the cause of freedom wherever it was only beginning to emerge.
