Summary/Abstract: The claim to universality by the sustainability sciences is based on the belief in the intrinsic compatibility of local and global human activities. But perhaps the most revealing novelty is a philosophical confidence in sustainability sciences as a trans-discipline that overcomes the classical sense of “scientific research” as a method for the clarification and revelation of reality. Sustainability sciences virtually emerge alongside pressing social, economic, and environmental issues. Therefore, they incline to incredulity of the status quo in various fields of work, non-linearity and transitivity of know-how, dynamism of scientific practices, and a search for new challenges as the benchmarks of activity. The article briefly discusses the philosophical, social and political implications of the sustainability discourse.
