The variation of the personal name Žofie in the Czech anthroponymy

Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the functioning of the proper personal name Žofie and its variants in the Czech anthroponymy. These names can be used either independently as a sin¬gle first name, or as a part of a double name, which can consist of two independent first names or these two names can be hyphenated. Among the studied names there are both variants with a long tradition of performance in the Czech environment, and variants that have appeared recently. In the article, attention is paid to the inventory of the names, as well as to their origin and peculi¬arities of their functioning in modern Czech anthroponymy. The analysis looks into the frequency of their use, dynamics, and popularity, both in general and in particular cases of naming newborns.
