Summary/Abstract: Disease, illness, catastrophes and similar phenomena were regarded from the earliest biblical narratives as direct actions of Yahweh, who intervenes in order to favor, save or correct his chosen people and who enters spatial, temporal and historical coordinates as a God of providence. This paper’s intent is to try and provide a holistic answer regarding the context of the pandemic that is affecting today’s world. How are we to view this current situation and similar ones? Is God the violent deity who smites Naomi or is He the merciful God who runs through the desert to save Haggar and her son from suffering, because they were seen and listened by God? We explore these two paradigmatic approaches to God, which are exemplary for human history.
