Summary/Abstract: This paper presents, for the first time in Hungarian historiography, the genesis, message, and reception of Sulpicius Severus’ Vita Martini. The first part sketches the history of fourth century Gaul with a special focus on the Gallo-Roman Christian aristocracy taken by the ascetic revolution. This is the circle that inspired and read Severus’ work. The second part deals with the Scriptural and hagiographical models of the new, “charismatic-prophetic-ascetic” Christian bishop, the mystical and self-denying pastor of his community, promoted by the Vita Martini. Finally, the paper surveys the problems and different interpretations of this powerful and fascinating text, the first Christian bestseller after the Bible.
