Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the method applied for providing and financing additional health care in Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States in comparison to the situation in the Czech Republic. The approaches applied in these countries are compared with particular reference to the identification of the problematic and, conversely, the positive aspects of these health care variants. Increasing health care expenditure in the Czech Republic call for a reassessment of contemporary practices concerning resource allocation and the consideration of methods that will increase the efficiency and sustainability of the system. The separation of standard and additional health care might present an option for achieving this goal. However, legislative effort to introduce such a system in 2011 ended in failure, when new legal regulations that divided health care into so-called basic and economically more demanding systems were repealed by the Constitutional Court. However, the Court did not declare that such a system was unconstitutional, and the introduction of new legal regulations concerning the separation of standard and additional health care thus remains possible, although, due to lack of political consensus, considerably complicated.
