Summary/Abstract: The topic of this article is Byzantine Trinitarian theology in the second half of the ninth century. The contributions of three authors – Michael the Stoudite, Nicetas the Paphlagonian and Metrophanes of Smyrna – are discussed. In their texts the focus is not on the controversy about the filioque but rather on the notion of consubstantiality: how can it be shown that the Father, the Son and the Spirit are one God? Michael engages with Tritheism whereas Nicetas and Metrophanes apply to the Trinity concepts that had been used in the image controversy.
