Summary/Abstract: The article is an attempt to non-anthropological read the fragment of Pan Tadeusz about an animal cementery. In the light of indigenous knowledge, Mickiewicz’s “matecznik” seems to be a relic of the animistic imagination, in which human and non-human persons have similar ontological status. Basing on the folk tradition rooted in the direct experience, the poet also anticipates quite modern natural science diagnoses – about the “spiritual life of animals” and their convergent with human mortual customs.
