Summary/Abstract: This article introduces the figure of an unusual woman, Eve von Tiele-Winckler, who was the daughter of a rich German industrial magnate living in Upper Silesia in the 19th. Century. For the Polish reader she is known as Mother Eve who left behind an incredible heritage; a centre in Bytom-Miechowice for people with various needs, but concentrating on those who are lonely, sick and rejected. While drafting the biography of Mother Eve the author tries to uncover how life in the borderland of nations, cultures, languages and religions influenced the formation of her identity. She tries to answer the question, why did a rich German maid befriended the inhabitants of Silesian and by doing so find the meaning and joy of life in helping the poorest and sickest who had been rejected by the whole society.
