Reading Clubs and Societies in the District of Rădăuți in the Year of 1924

Summary/Abstract: Reading rooms and reading societies have emerged as a cultural and social necessity in the Romanian community in Bukovina. Cultural and academic societie s supported the establishment and development of the reading rooms and societies of citizens from Bucovina. Reading rooms and societies from Rădăuți County began their activities after 1880 and continued until 1940.In the year 1924, the Prefecture of Rădăuți County managed, with the Town Halls’support a statistical data on the organization of the reading rooms and societies. These contributed through organized activities to the promotion and preservation of national identity and traditional cultural values for this historical area. In Rădăuți, the reading rooms have put into practice their objectives by: acquisition the books, subscriptions to newspapers and magazines, speeches and conferences for educating their members, organizing theater performances and parties, choirs and meetings, supporting the country students with good results at learning.
