Summary/Abstract: Processions are at once arenas where social actors compete and spaces of general consensus in which “national mythology” is regularly reactivated. While ritual time is defined by extensive socialization and by the intensity of religious activities following the rhythm of an ecclesiastical calendar, it also reproduces the social inequalities and political dependencies of everyday life. Based on ethnographic data collected during several field stays in the Aegean islands since 1997, this article analyzes, on the one hand, how social relations are organized through religious processions; and on the other hand, the specificity of the status of the Orthodox Church in Greece in relation to its neighbouring Balkan countries.
