Summary/Abstract: In the works of Karl Polanyi one can find not one, but two theories of money. The first, contained inThe Great Transformation, maintains that in a marketsociety there is a contradiction between the fictionof automatic money based on the gold parity and theguided money, the supply of which is determined bythe policies of the central bank and commercial banks. The second theory, presented in the article “Semanticsof Money Uses”, treats money as a semantic systemanalogous to human speech. According to this view, money acquires meaning through its application inspecific, socially-defined situations. The aim of the article is to critically reconstruct both theories anddemonstrate their usefulness for understanding therole of money in contemporary market economies.
