Summary/Abstract: This contribution aims to provide, by shedding some light on the Greek tradition, a survey of texts dealing with the theme of metamorphoses before Ovid composed his masterpiece. The outline will be divided into two parts. In a first step, westart from Antoninus Liberaris' collection of metamorphoses and discuss the authors named as sources at the beginning of each story that Antoninus narrates. This offers afirst but limited entry to the Greek tradition of metamorphoses, as we have preserved only very few elements about the works mentioned. Therefore, the second part will turn to papyrological findings and present two examples where extracts from Greek texts dealing with metamorphoses were deciphered (P. Mich. 1447 v and P. Oxy. 4711). Both give some insights into the variety of texts that circulated before Ovid took up the theme, but none of them can be attributed unambiguously to any known author.
