Summary/Abstract: Naumova’s observes the augmented sixth chord and its relationship to multiple functions from historical and geographical perspectives. With the theories of various authors as context, she traces the chord’s use from the Baroque, Classical and Romantic eras to examples of jazz harmony. Her flexible approach, which encourages students to develop informed opinions based on appropriate textual evaluation, will make a worthy contribution to the harmony classroom.
