Summary/Abstract: Specific narrative strategies used by Dubravka Ugrešić in her prose writing are the issue of this article. The analysis is based upon a way in which she uses trivial genres, particularly trivial romance, making pastiche out of it, but in such a way to discern its subversive potentials concerning so called “high literature”. The other characteristic narrative procedure Dubravka Ugrešić uses is parodic rewriting of some well known piece from literary canon. In both cases, she makes significant, basically subversive modifications within narrative models she uses. Being primarily interested in problems of writing itself, she rises some crucial metanarrative problems, hence her writing should be regarded as a kind of metafiction. The other theme of this article are women. The topic is closely linked with author’s interest in popular romances; on the other hand, she also very often rises questions linked with women’s attitude towards writing, and their specific position in the world of literature.
