Summary/Abstract: Boundary objects simultaneously belong to several communities (so-called information worlds) and fulfill the information needs each of them. They can be easily adapted (customized) to the needs of any information world. At the same time, they ensure uniformity of operations across many applications. Such objects facilitate communication, but without blurring the differences between user groups. Each information system, to be able to perform basic functions, must be a boundary object, consisting of many subsystems also having this feature. From the point of view of the theory of information genres, both information system and its elements (e.g. database) should be treated as information genres, having the characteristics of boundary objects, i.e. those that allow discourse communities to reconcile over boundaries and differences. They enable the exchange of data and information objects within and between communicating worlds. In this way, the information system genre should be treated as a boundary object, shared by many information worlds above their differences.
