Summary/Abstract: Archives are an important factor in development of society. Their activities should support cultural development. The article attempts to prove that archives are cultural institutions. The legal foundations of archives in Poland, examples of activities carried out in the sphere of broadly understood culture as well as threats to the material form of documents and methods of their prevention using conservation work standards were discussed.
